Cheese Burl, Maple Burl, and Bolivian Rosewood Combination Knife Scales - s-315
$34.00
Top: Cheese burl (natural color)
Middle: Silver maple burl (dyed) with 4 layers of vulcanized fiber
Bottom: Bolivian Rosewood
.35” x 6-1/8” x 1-5/8”
Made in Greenville, SC.
Scales are wet with denatured alcohol to show grain for photo.
Bolivian rosewood is intentionally not stabilized due to it being a very dense and naturally oily wood. Stabilizing forces the oils out of the cells and onto the surface of the grain, which makes bonding with glues and epoxies weak. It's one of the few woods that does not benefit from being stabilized.
Due to the grain texture of wenge and some burl woods, there may be very tiny voids visible on the surface of scales. I attempt to fill all voids that may naturally occur in the wood but the tiny ones may slip through. These tiny surface voids will mostly be removed when you shape your handles.
